I like Peter Chan. I favored his entry in San Geng and was pleasantly surprised by Perhaps Love. I'm pretty sure it was the first time I watched a musical I actually enjoyed. So with dread I saw him take on Warlords, a film that sounded so big and vast that I feared he had sold his talent to a simple blockbuster in which he would have little say. I was wrong, obviously.

Belgium is a country of books and comics, not so much of animation. On rare occasions though, something worthwhile or interesting rises to the surface, and if anything, Blanche Neige: La Suite falls right into this category. The English translation of the title is Snow White: The Sequel, which might give you an idea about the direction this film is going. Better think again.

Japan ... where else do you find directors active in both erotic and experimental politically oriented cinema, sometimes even in the same film? What a country huh. Wakamatsu has almost 100 (99 to be precise) films to his name, most of them pinku (erotic) films. But every once in a while he rises up from the genre and takes a swing at politically themed artistic filming. Cycling Chronicles: Landscapes the Boy Saw is such a swing, and not a bad one either.

Selick is somewhat of an unfortunate director. Even though he sculpted an immensely popular film, he failed to receive the creative recognition for it. As the director of Nightmare Before Christmas, he saw most of the credits go to Tim Burton (who many believe directed the film). Selick's later films didn't really make much of an impression, but with Coraline he was more than determined to get his revenge. After four years of high expectations, Selick finally delivers.

Zhang Yibai is possibly one of the most overlooked directors of the Chinese film industry. Spring Subway is his first film and already has all his talents on display. It's also a perfect film for gaining international attention, still almost nobody seems to know about Yibai's work. I've wrote about Lost Indulgence, Yibai's latest film, before but even that film seems to have slipped by most people. All the more reason to write about this neat little gem.
