paris - day 2
breakfast cellar (image 1 of 22)
We had our breakfast in a little 16th century cellar. Very cosy , very romantic and very good food too. French love their bread alright.
tai-chi-nese (image 2 of 22)
Never saw this before, and while it isn't all that special it caught us pretty off-guard. Real Chinese people doing real Tai Chi! With their very own music pounding from their ghetto blaster.
catacombs entrance (image 3 of 22)
Linn stopping to read up on the history of the catacombs. A rather long hallway leads you to the actual graveyard. Things were still clean here, though a little narrow.
ground water (image 4 of 22)
A little spot in the catacombs where they dug deeper to find the ground water level. Seems the didn't need to dig all that deep to get there.
big hall below paris (image 5 of 22)
Not all paths were narrow down there. From time to time you hit a lovely room like this. Great atmosphere, about 100 steps below Paris.
entering the graveyard (image 6 of 22)
The entrance of the real graveyard. 6 million skeletons are buried (or stacked - as you wish) down here. Sitting and staring at you at arms length. A bit creepy alright.
skull niche (image 7 of 22)
Plenty of places like these down there, with niches filled with bones, skulls and crosses settled in between them.
graveyard hallways (image 8 of 22)
Turn after turn, you encounter hallways like these. It seems to go on forever. After some time you get used to it all but it remains pretty impressive to see all the dead stacked like this.
eiffel's tower (image 9 of 22)
You can't go to Paris without bumping into this fella. Pretty ugly, but impressive in size and still cool from close by.
close-up from one side (image 10 of 22)
You can climb this thing on foot, though I don't see who'd want to do that. Impressive web of steel wires, but a little cold during the winter.
view from the seine (image 11 of 22)
The big brown river flowing through Paris. Plenty of bridges to admire the view from those.
spikey sea creatures (image 12 of 22)
And of course we paid a little visit to the aquarium. Not as cool as the one in Antwerp, but it still houses some nice underwater creatures.
finding nemo fakes (image 13 of 22)
Every aquarium needs a Finding Nemo fish these days, but which is the real one. Maybe these are helper Nemo fish.
huge cancer (image 14 of 22)
A great animal this one. It decided to make a little tour around its house when we arrived. Such a show-off.
slug-fish (image 15 of 22)
No idea what kind of creature this was, but it looked like a mixture of fish and slug. It did look a little lonely in there, poor thing.
blow-me-fish (image 16 of 22)
Another lovely creature, though it looked like it had a serious air hose addiction. Wonder what was inside the fish and whether smaller creatures could survive down there.
flashy jellyfish (image 17 of 22)
Cool idea. Put some white jellyfish in four tubes and apply a different color to each tube. The effect is this. Shame you can't keep these at home.
tour eiffel by night (image 18 of 22)
When night falls, the lights go on and it becomes a huge gleaming tower. At 8 at night it even starts flickering for 5 minutes, but you can't get that on photo.
tour montparnasse (image 19 of 22)
We had free tickets for this one. Top three floors are open for public, you rise 56 floors in 38 seconds. The view up there was magical.
view from the top (image 20 of 22)
This is where I asked Linn to marry me. You have to admit, what nicer view to have when you pop the question. Pretty creepy to stand that high is such a narrow tower though.
enjoying the metro (image 21 of 22)
The metro in Paris is pretty crap. The train itself is fast enough but getting there can be a serious hassle. luckily they had some flat escalators in some sections to move things along.
place de republique (image 22 of 22)
A good view from La Place de République at night.
