santorini nature
centre and north part
Great view from the centre and north part of Santorini. Small place so you get a perfect view from the whole island on some higher spots.
volcano evidence
In some parts the evidence of volcanic activity is still pretty obvious. Just look at the terraces in this shot.
nearby islands
Santorini is just part of the big volcanic crater. On the far left in the pic you see Aspronisi, in the back is Therasia and in the centre the two little volcanos. The biggest of the two is still active.
nearby the volcano
The sunlight makes it hard to capture the blackness of the lava stones on the volcano, it came out rather well in this shot. Water, sky and lava!
lava close-up
Close-up shots of some volcanic rocks. These fellows were thrown in the air for a good 200m when the volcano last erupted ('50).
not all is lava
Good pic demonstrating the different kinds of ground found on the volcano. You've got grey, white, red and black all lined up. Behind it you see the centre of Santorini.
island cover
Most of the island is covered with pumice. This is the lightest stone part of the eruption and reaches the furthest. It stays in the air the longest and so it covers the all the rest.
crater wall
In inside of the Santorini crater is pretty interesting as it runs up to 300 high and demonstrates all ground layers in the earth. Or you get little gems like these.
import trees
Santorini has no fresh water of its own and no trees of its own. You can find some trees living off salt water on the edges of the island, besides that the only trees can be found in towns. This one grows red pepper balls. Never knew these things grew on trees in the first place.
crater
Everywhere you go inside the caldera you look up against these stone walls. Santorini looks pretty rough from inside the crater but once on the flanks of the volcano it's actually pretty flat.
mist
First 5 days where clear as can be (literally no clouds at all). The last 2 days mist started pouring in from the sea. An impressive sight.
mist caught in the caldera
Clouds come in from the north and get caught in the caldera. The hit the crater wall and stay there for a while until they get high enough to pour over the island.
mist on the lower part
The mist is pretty cool if you're on the higher grounds, but in the south it spills over the island pretty quickly. This is the result.
banging against the crater
A good shot from the clouds banging against the crater wall. You really feel like you're above the clouds (which you are of course) at only ~250m high.
aspronisi sunset
Right before the sun starts setting the sea turns silver, capturing Aspronisi (only just a rock) in its glow.
caldera traffic
It's hard to capture a picture of the caldera without any boats. There are volcano cruises all day long and cruise ships pour in every day.
