santorini towns
thira overview (image 1 of 17)
Overview of the crater section of Thira, the capital of Santorini. Lots of white and blue like in every other town.
biggest church (image 2 of 17)
The only trees can be found in villages and town. Another view of Thira accompanied by the biggest church on the island.
church close-up (image 3 of 17)
Close-up of the biggest church on the island. One of the 450 churches over there, on a total of 14000 inhabitants.
thira commercial center (image 4 of 17)
The commercial centre of Thira is made up of small streets, stairs and lots of little shops. No room for cars or bikes.
santorini flowers (image 5 of 17)
Villages and town are decorated with these purple/pink flowers. You'll notice them anywhere as they are quite contrasting with the otherwise so soft colors of the island.
more flowers (image 6 of 17)
Spanning a whole square, these flowers did make for some welcome shadow. Something heavily lacking in Santorini.
normal church (image 7 of 17)
This is what every other church on Santorini looks like. White stone (foam of the sea), blue roof (color of the sky) with a little white cross on top.
ia view (image 8 of 17)
View from Ia (northern town) taken from the Caldera. A little harbour below, the town above and some red rocks in between. And quite lucky I could make 16:9 pictures.
typical house (image 9 of 17)
Houses on Santorini are all the same. They don't know bricks like we do. All are white or soft pastel colors and most roofs are arced.
megalochori road (image 10 of 17)
Small town in the centre of the island. One road, one square, almost deserted during the day. Quite lovely.
megalochori centre (image 11 of 17)
The centre square of Megalochori. Lovely place, though everywhere you look you encounter phone wires. Ia is the only place on the island where they are below surface.
stairs and more stairs (image 12 of 17)
Everywhere you look you find stairs. The most notorious descents are in Thira (588 stairs) and Ia (288 stairs). This road was particularly nice, featuring some welcome trees for providing shadow.
emporio centre (image 13 of 17)
The centre of Emporio is almost impossible to visit on your own. When Santorini was rebuilt in the 70s there were no architects on the island. This resulted in small streets, crazy layouts and stairs everywhere. Awesome to cross with a guide though.
red beach (image 14 of 17)
Different kinds of ground can be found across the island. Red beach features the typical red rocks which contrasts quite nicely with the white buildings.
bell tower (image 15 of 17)
Bell towers everywhere, often close to churches. On certain occasions they are still used, causing quite a symphony across the island.
no more church (image 16 of 17)
Little church tower surrounded by white walls. If you spend a week on the island you will recognize this as one of the most typical views.
night view of the harbour (image 17 of 17)
A night view of the only harbour to accept ferry boats. Most harbours can only be reached by steps (on foot or on a donkey), this one is accessible by car or bus.
