venice
postcard entry
It was still a little cloudy when we arrived in Venice (pretty early in the morning I should add). Still, it made for a lovely arrival.
the grand canal
Once the clouds passed the sun provided some lovely views of the canals. Venice is really twice as beautiful when the sun comes out.
basic views
This is all there is to Venice. Small canals, old buildings and tiny passageways. Good stuff and very charming to explore.
palazzos
Sitting at the San Marco square, we had plenty of time to take a good look at the palazzos there. Like most buildings in Venice, a little touching up wouldn't be out of place.
the venice lion
The proud symbol of Venice. Currently it's being owned by a little bird looking into the opposite direction though. Life of a statue is hard.
venice masks
Venice and masks are pretty much synonyms. Every two other shops in the city you'll find a mask shop, even in the less tourist-flooded parts. Most of them sell traditional stuff, this one had some cooler ones on display. If I ever make it to the Venice carnival I'll be wearing one of these.
rialto bridge
The Rialto bridge, next to the San Marco square the most popular place for tourists to visit. Like most tourists attractions in Venice though, it can't compete with simply getting lost inside the inner bowels of the city.
.. and down it goes
The bustling Grand Canal is quite a sight, even more so when the sun is setting, casting some nice shadows and reflections on the water surface.
venice by night
Our hotel was located in a quieter quarter of the city. Once the sun set the streets became deserted. All the more fun when strolling around at night.
uberkitsch chandlier
Close to Venice lies Murano, the glass blower's island. There's some nice stuff being made there, but also a lot of typical kitsch. We were lucky enough to encounter a prime example in our hotel room.
the laguna
The laguna really changes its face when the sun is out. Here's the mandatory tilted sea meets skyline shot! Can't have an image gallery without one of those.
murano entry
When reaching Murano you are welcomed by a lovely lighthouse.
hair and lighthouse
It's just what the title says. Not my hair mind, it's all Linda's.
murano canals
Murano doesn't look all that different from Venice, though the main canal is a lot quieter. Not as many boats and tourists here.
building looking mighty old
One of the million old-looking, run-down buildings. They add a lot to the charm of the city, though I wonder what a lick of paint might do. On the other hand, it's a good thing the city isn't overrun by modern architecture. It keeps the spirit of the city alive.
murano glass
One of the glorious glass statues sprinkled around the island of Murano. Glass is everything on the island and they're keen to tell you all about it.
glass woman
A second statue combining glass with metal forming a female figure. With the sun right behind it, it became a perfect opportunity for a nice picture.
cemetery island
When you die in Venice they bring you to a separate island. A lovely cemetery, though you can't help but wonder what they'll do when it is completely filled with dead people. Perfect location for a zombie flick.
the quiet of the cemetery
This picture was taken on the cemetery island. The whole island is dedicated to graves and burial grounds. Perfect if you prefer some quiet time and lots of green.
charming nights
One thing missing during the nights in Venice is some lighting on the canals. I bet you could do lovely things with that, for now the lights on the houses are all the decorative lighting you'll be getting. Makes it a little harder to take good pics.

[the laguna] There's Dutch tilt, and then there's Belgium tilt. Nice pictures :)
