thailand - koh samui
centara beach lobby
The lobby of our hotel in Koh Samui. There were no actual outside walls in the back, just screens that could be lowered. It made for a very open and airy atmosphere.
the pool area
A look at a small part of the pool area. The pool was actually quite big and went of for another three of four different sections.
centara gardens
A view from our room's balcony. The Centara hotel has some nice gardens and greenery on its estate, meaning there were lots of frogs, crickets and other somewhat creepy animals around at night.
nice view of chaweng beach
A view of both the Chaweng north and south beaches. Our hotel was at the north beach which has clearer sand and lesser rocks. Altogether a better place to swim.
shrine to keep people safe
Shrines like these pop up once in a while. People bring food and decorations to it every day. Cars and motorcycles will honk when they pass. And all of that because people believe it will keep them from harm.
5-headed snake variation
Another variation on the 5-headed snake statue. A pretty nice temple, though a little kitschy.
mummified monk
Legendary mummified monk who predicted his own death, sat down and mummified himself through meditation alone. Apparently science has no explanation, he still looks pretty well-preserved for someone who's been dead 38 years. The sunglasses are a cool touch.
butterfly gardens
Flowers in the butterfly garden. A mild drizzle spoiled the fun for the first half hour, as butterflies don't take to well to rain apparently.
the actual butterflies
Try to spot all the butterflies in this pic. I counted at least five, but there are bound to be more. The fluttered like crazy when things got a little drier.
uninhabited island
Leisure time on an uninhabited island. A rather pretty bay, shallow waters, some coral to explore and lots of sunshine. Couldn't ask for more.
rain is coming
Tropical storms are not uncommon, luckily they could be spotted from quite a distance. As you can see, this wasn't the best time to go to Koh Tan (lots of coral around there).
thai mainland up close
Close to the mainland. We went there to watch the pink dolphins (we even spotted a few up close - really neat animals).
dolphin tour
A view of the Thai mainland a little time offshore. Good weather and awesome views would've made the trip alone worth its while.
hidden views of thailand
From time to time you come across places like these. A small bay opens up and you get a glimpse of the Thai mainland hidden behind some mountains.
fresh market - desserts!
Thai desserts! I actually recognized quite a few from our local Thai store in Antwerp, but it was pretty cool to see them in such large quantities on the local Chaweng market.
fresh cocounut
Fresh coconuts. Chip off the top, put in some straws and you get one of the most awesome holiday drinks you can imagine.
linn & cocktails
Linn enjoying a refreshing cocktail. Just one of the many we had over there, they were pretty good for hotel standards too.
linn & wine
Linn drinking wine in a local restaurant. We both had two glasses each, which easily accounted for 60% of the total bill. Food is dead cheap over there, only 2.5EUR in total for a delicious green curry.
thai buffet
The last evening we had a Thai buffet. Five different courses, all Thai food. I think I almost exploded when I finally finished. These were just a selection of the main courses. There were also curries, a fresh noodle stand, salads and a rich dessert buffet.
coconut dessert
Best dessert ever. This is coconut pie with kiwi and vanilla dressings. It competed quite heavily with the coconut pancakes, but this still came out as the winner.
dining on the beach
Saturday nights there were dinners at the beach. Pretty cool, shame we didn't actually get the chance to attend one.
late night drink
The bar at night. Ideal for a late night cocktail before wandering off to bed. The only thing you had to mind were the nasty mosquitoes there.
centara lobby at night
On our way back to the room. The lobby by night was quite a sight indeed.
bangkok airport inside
Inside one of the main gates of Bangkok Airport. We were quite sad returning back home, but at least the lush sights of the airport cheered me up just a little.
