Log: week 28 / 2018
Some youngsters go camping in the woods, guess what happens next. The film is eager to reference Friday the 13th, but Romina is not your average slasher film. Cohen serves a grim and sinister horror film, but ultimately it's just a little too flimsy to make a big impact. Decent filler though.
Decent drama/comedy that starts well enough. The film is bright and colorful and benefits from an upbeat atmosphere. The drama isn't up to par though and some of the comedy, especially in the second part of the film, is quite lame. Could and should've been better with the material at hand.
A relentless dark comedy, disguised as a crime/action film. Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe form an insane duo who stampede through the film, brutally killing all that stand in their way. Schrader adds a level of mystery that makes it even more intriguing, sadly the second half saggs a little.
Nice but somewhat traditional tale about a young girl dressing up as a boy to save her family. The setting is an interesting one for an animation film, the artstyle (think Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea) is exquisite, but the story is a tad too by the numbers to make it truly engaging.
After four films, you should pretty much know what to expect. Some cool car chases, some bad drama and the old cast complete. The problem with part 5 is that it lasts a full 130 minutes. There definitely isn't enough material to warrant such a running time. Not terrible, but too long.
Strange and surprising mix of horror, fantasy and drama. The core of the film is simple hillbilly terror, but there are so many interesting details and the execution is so unique that it never feels like revisiting a particular influence. One of the best horror films I've seen in a while.
Rather annoying. Depp's characters is childish and unfunny, the rest of the cast isn't much better. Mortdecai feels like a pastiche on posh British attitude, but it isn't edgey enough to make it funny. It's just a mediocre art heist with poor action scenes, flat comedy and some heavy overacting.
Not bad. The artstyle is interesting and makes a good case for more variety in CG animation. The animation isn't up to par though and the dub is rather poor, luckily there isn't that much dialogue. The story is decent enough, though just a little too sentimental and convenient in places.
