Hamaguchi doesn't care about runtime, that much is obvious. Some of his films are excruciatingly long, others are a bit too short. I wouldn't have minded an extended version of Heaven Is Still Far Away, but as it is, it's a sweet and interesting little drama with some poignant moments and a fun, fantastical touch.

The performances are excellent, the little twist in the plot adds to the intrigue, and the impact of the drama is there, even though you only spend a short time with these characters. The presentation is pleasant too, but as is often the case in Hamaguchi's films, it's not the strong point of the film. Some breezy fun for all who like Hamaguchi's work, but don't have several hours to spend.
