This film came as quite a surprise. Not that I didn't believe Woo was capable of doing a proper comedy, I was already aware it was one of his go-to genres at the start of his career. But to see him do a Chaplin-inspired film, and have it be one of his best comedies, that I didn't expect. But hey, here we are. Sadly, few people seem to be aware of this film in Woo's oeuvre.
There are many obvious references to Chaplin's films, but some familiarity with Hong Kong comedy will come in handy. There's a lot of energy and noise, and the performances are well over the top. The first hour is fun but quite predictable, the final 30 minutes Woo goes all in, and all the best moments are packed together in a series of hilarious scenes. Easily my favorite Woo comedy, and one of the better films he directed.
