One of the better Scandinavian films I've seen lately. The premise is interesting, the drama is intriguing and there's a dark comedy finish that ties everything together. The film is part of a broader movement that has been eager to mix drama, social critique, and comedy, but very few have gotten the balance right. The presentation is a bit flat, but the performances are solid, the premise is nasty (and a pretty decent analogy for how far some will go just for a little attention) and the imagined outcomes of Signe's little ploys are pretty hilarious. Borgli went A24 and moved his business to the US. The fact that he got Nicolas Cage to join his film was promising, sadly it plays like most other A24 films I've seen. It's all a bit kooky and weird, especially during the first half, but the plot felt uncertain during the second half, and by the time the film ended, it felt like a relative letdown. The premise is interesting and mysterious, Cage plays his part with a big smirk, and most of the dream sequences are properly executed. Things start to fall apart when the film tries to touch on more serious topics. I don't think Borgli was the right guy for this material, but it's not a bad film. Just a little underwhelming.Read all
