Cronenberg's return to the body horror genre has been getting quite a lot of attention, not too odd considering he's one of the founders of the genre. I'm not the biggest Cronenberg fan, but I was curious to see how his latest would stack up against the work of his son (who I like a lot better). There are some interesting ideas and concepts here, but the film lacks a well-paced plot, the cinematography could've been better, and the score isn't all that either. Cronenberg's musings about art, humanity and evolution feel a bit old and tired, and they are forced into the film rather crudely. The film certainly stands out and there are some memorable scenes, it just doesn't really flow that well.Read all

I'm always happy to catch a new Cronenberg, but nowadays I'm way more excited about Brendon's work. The Shrouds is David's latest, and it's been a while since he made anything half-decent. This wasn't a true return to form, but there were some interesting tidbits that kept me interested. The body horror is a little tacked on, and the sci-fi stuff felt like leftover Black Mirror material, but Cronenberg manages to create an uncomfortable atmosphere, and there are some solid performances to go along with it. The genre elements felt less accomplished, and the style is a bit outdated. Not the worst, but I think it's time to make room for the kids.Read all
